Applications are now open for the 2016 Roy W. Howard National Collegiate Reporting Competition, which awards nine of the country’s top journalists from universities all around the country with an all-expenses paid trip to Japan each year.

The Scripps Howard Foundation, with Indiana University journalism, established the Roy W. Howard National Collegiate Reporting Competition in 1984 to honor the memory of the journalist who led Scripps Howard Newspapers from 1922-1953 and United Press from 1912-1920. Asia was an area of special interest to Roy W. Howard, who traveled and reported on the area extensively, even while leading major news organizations.
Emily Metzgar, associate professor of journalism at Indiana University, will lead the students during the nine-day trip, which includes visits to domestic and international media organizations and cultural landmarks. In the past, the students have visited MBS Television, Associated Press Tokyo, the Wall Street Journal and Google. The group will also tour Buddhist temples in Kyoto, the A-bomb memorial in Hiroshima, and other historical sites. Tentative trip dates are May 12-21, 2016.
