Maurice Gattis, Ph.D., the Senior Advisor to the Queer Research and Advocacy Center (Q Collective) and an associate professor in the School of Social Work, recently detailed how LGBTQ+ youth are overrepresented in the rising population of people experiencing homelessness.

His article on the news website SWHELPER goes beyond recounting the risks these youth face, e.g., higher incidence of substance abuse, sexual assault, and becoming victims of hate crimes, to outlining a framework for solutions.

“[E]ven as racial and sexual minority statuses come with increased stresses and risks,” Gattis states, “they can also be sources of strength when members of these minority groups can identify with, and experience camaraderie with, other members of their respective minority group(s).”
