Fall & Winter Break Information for First-Year Students
Fall and Winter Break are almost here!
In observance of Fall Break, the building will close on Saturday, November 20, 2021 at 10:00 a.m. and reopen Sunday, November 28 at 10 a.m.
In observance of Winter Break, the building will close on Wednesday, December 22, 2021 at 10 a.m. and reopen Friday, January 14 at 10 a.m.
Additionally, the area office and mail room will be closed during this time.
As you leave for the breaks, please remember the following items:
- Turn off all lights
- Turn all water faucets off
- Unplug small appliances and other electrical items, except refrigerators
- Clean all perishable foods from the refrigerator
- Remove all trash from your living space
- Close and lock all windows
- Close all blinds
- Put heat on 70 degrees or off, if possible
- Take home valuables and medications
- Before leaving, be sure to take your keys and ID and make sure your door is securely locked
RAs will be performing a Health and Safety Inspection of each room during Fall Break once the building is closed. These inspections include checking for cleanliness, prohibited items, as well as the completion of all the items on the list above. We will contact anyone with violations once the building has reopened. If you have any questions please feel free to follow up with your RA.
Residents not returning to their current space in January are required to move everything when leaving for winter break. They will need to complete a formal check out by following the steps below:
- If a resident needs move-out assistance, they are permitted one opportunity to bring up to two guests to help during the specified dates and times below.
- November 17 – 20, 8 a.m. – 8 p.m.
- December 16 – 21, 8 a.m. – 8 p.m.
- December 22, 8 a.m. – 10 a.m.
- Guests will need to check in at the front desk prior to entering the building during the timeframes listed above and must depart by the close of assisting hour. Guests will be given wristbands during move-out. Guests without wristbands will be asked to leave the building.
- All residents and guests should wear face coverings at all times and follow all VCU guidelines
- Remove all tape, staples, thumbtacks, etc. from walls, ceilings, floors and furniture.
- Remove all personal belongings from the unity. Check closets, wardrobes, drawers, and under/behind furniture.
- Complete an express check-out envelope, seal keys inside or indicate that the keys were lost, and leave them in the designated bin.
- Any items left in room after Dec 22, 2021 at 10 a.m. will be discarded.
- Residential Life & Housing will not be providing carts. Residents should bring their own cart or dolly to help with move-out. Residents can express check-out from their space at any time.
