What tools helped you the most when you started out?
While studying at VCU, I discovered a significant need in the region for quality affordable housing. That research helped shape the needs statement that ultimately guided the launch of our business. Early on, there were two key factors that were instrumental to our success. First, leveraging the right software and tools to stay organized and deliver essential services efficiently. Second, building a strong network of reliable subcontractors, supportive mentors and loyal clients whose referrals played a major role in our growth.
What was the biggest challenge to maintaining your business?
One of the challenges we faced was finding a reliable construction service vendor or subcontractor to consistently support our workflow. To address this issue, we made the decision to become a class A contractor and build our own construction services division. This shift has not only opened new markets for our real estate services but has also enabled Hylton & Co. to offer a full range of services. What was once a source of uncertainty has now become a key driver of our growth and stability.
What advice do you have for people considering starting a business?
Do it without hesitation.
