The latest news from Virginia Commonwealth University

Kahlil Shepard was eager to leave his suburban neighborhood for a true city experience. With interests in track and the arts, he found VCU had what he was looking for. Now an award-winning advertising researcher, the New York City Chapter co-leader encourages fellow alumni to “take advantage of their initial investment” and use the resources and network VCU provides.

Why did you choose VCU?

Back in high school, I really only cared about two things: becoming a photographer and running track. VCU has both an amazing arts program and a dope track program, which is unique nationally. I also really wanted a city environment (away from my parents in Northern Virginia), so VCU was a mecca of opportunity for me when I came in 2014.

How did VCU prepare you for what you do and who you are today?

I currently work as a senior strategist at a research and creative agency called A—B in New York City. Which really means I spend a lot of time helping progressive leaders in politics figure out how to move audiences of color on specific issues like abortion, the economy, crime immigration, etc.

The minute I started my job in 2020, I was writing scripts, video editing, doing desk research and presenting a lot. I almost felt overprepared because of the amount of practical time I had spent doing those things in my class work.

What excites you about co-leading the NYC Chapter? What are you looking forward to this year?

For me personally, my goal with the chapter is to establish a consistent support network for established folks in the city. New York is crazy, and I truly believe that anytime someone moves up or wants to meet more people, the alumni group should be their second thought (the first is figuring out the train).

Why should alumni stay connected with VCU?

We invest an insane amount of personal and financial energy into our VCU experience while we’re there, but when you graduate it’s an opportunity to keep taking advantage of that initial investment. There’s so many resources and connections I’m still capitalizing on through VCU Alumni.

Anything else you’d like to share with us, such as personal or professional accomplishments?

A campaign I worked on was recently selected as an honoree for the 2024 Webby awards, which was very cool. Additionally I’ve won a few Anthem awards (the social impact arm of the Webbys) for my work in advertising. Which is more about my personal crusade to make advocacy work as sought after as a job at Ogilvy or Nike. I think we need that energy now more than ever. But my biggest accomplishment is literally being able to afford $7 New York coffees once a week.
