Saleh Smadi had known for some time that he wanted to work in health care. When he was a child growing up in Jordan, he had fractured his tooth while playing outside. The broken tooth caused him unimaginable pain, and his parents had to drive him more than an hour to visit the closest dentist. The ordeal made a lasting impression, later inspiring him to pursue a career where he could provide the same kind of relief from pain that he had experienced.

Department of Periodontics announces graduate program leadership changes

Rafael Amorim Cavalcanti de Siqueira, D.D.S., M.S., Ph.D, has been named director of the Graduate Program in Periodontics, succeeding longtime director Thomas Waldrop, D.D.S., M.S. Additionally, Amirreza Ghassemi, D.D.S., M.S., will serve as director of the Graduate Periodontics Clinic, where he will advance clinical education and operational processes within the graduate clinic.

Heather Tuthill, M.P.H., B.S.D.H., R.D.H, will be installed as the 2022-2023 president of the Virginia Dental Hygienists’ Association (VDHA) later this month. Tuthill is the senior dental hygiene clinical coordinator for the Dental Hygiene program at VCU School of Dentistry.

VCU Diversity P.A.T.H.S. program assists underrepresented students in their path to dental school

VCU’s Dental Career Exploration program is a pipeline program for rising 10th graders through graduating seniors from all over the commonwealth who are interested in exploring a career in dentistry. The goal of the free program is to increase diversity in the dental field by removing barriers for high school students from underrepresented backgrounds and underserved communities.
