Dr. B. Ellen Byrne (B.S. ’77, D.D.S. ’83, Endo ’90, Ph.D. ’91), senior associate dean and professor of endodontics, helped the Richmond Times Dispatch find out why an oral surgeon might have delayed a procedure for a patient taking drugs to counter the effects of osteoporosis.

Byrne said that there is some controversy on how to treat patients taking this type of drug but that most medical literature does not support stopping the use of these drugs for routine procedures. She encouraged collaboration between doctors performing the dental procedures and those prescribing bone loss drugs.
