Key note by Dr Kirk Norbo

Kirk NorboDr Kirk Norbo gave a key note talk on the future of dentistry. In his talk he highlighted some areas of challenge of particular relevance to the new dentist. There is a rapid pace of change in new technologies for dentistry. This has huge cost implications especially for smaller practices and it is important for new dentists to remember that you should only buy things that you really need and that will improve the efficiency of your dental practice.

This issue of reimbursement continues to remain a challenge and it was pointed out by Kirk that keeping accountability trails for all dental procedures can ease the reimbursement burden.

Dentistry is not unlike any other commercial area and business models are continuing to evolve with an increase in the number of large corporate practices over single dentists clinics. This presents a choice for the newly qualified dentist to determine what type of practice best suits them.

For the small local practice in particular Dr Norbo considered the importance of marketing to maintain and increase your patient population. Through his experience he believes that being active in your local community is one of the best ways to build and maintain your reputation and your dental practice.

Finishing on appositive note for those students graduating this year who plan to go into dental practice it appears now is a good time to buy.

Dr. Kirk Norbo is currently the President of the Virginia Dental Association.  He is a graduate of the University of Richmond and Oral Roberts School of Dentistry and an adjunct faculty at the VCU School of Dentistry in Richmond and a fellow of the American College of Dentists, the International College of Dentists, Master of the Academy of General Dentistry and fellow of the Virginia Dental Association.
