The 11th clinic and research day took place on Thursday April 18th. There were 38 poster presentations from the faculty and students in the dental school. The posters covered a wide variety of research areas reflecting the diverse nature of research that takes place within the school.

All of the posters featured topically relevant areas of research and included

  • Investigations on the strength of composite materials
  • Oral health prevention and the role of dentists in the wider health agenda
  • the impacts of Medicaid and the acceptance of Medicaid within a private practice setting
  • investigation of molecular pathways in in squamous cell carcinoma of the head and neck
  • Molecular pathways in bacteria causing periodontal disease.

Louis N FormicaThe DENTSPLY award for the best dental student poster presentation went to Louis N. Formica a D2. Louis poster entitle “Nutritional Counseling practices in pediatric dentistry: A National Survey” explored the role of the dentist as a front role healthcare provider for early stage health through the provision of educational material on nutrition and its role in the prevention of caries and other health disorders. Louis will be presenting his research at the ADA meeting in New Orleans in October.

A review of the Medicaid and Pro-bono utilization in orthodontic practice by Taylor Blake received the second prize. Although Taylor, a D4, experienced some difficulty in obtaining a high level of response from her survey, the study raised the issues of the poor perception of Medicaid and highlighted how difficult it can be to engage orthodontists in this discussion. Her work provides a case study on the difficulty of using surveys to deal with ‘sensitive issues’.

Hanel Choi (D3) in third place, exhibited an excellent understanding of developing and testing a research hypothesis in her work on the Role of putative TonB proteins in hemin uptake in P. gingivalis. Her presentation was well constructed and showed much promise when she can overcome some technical challenges.

Sukhpreet KaurSukhpreet Kaur (D2)  in fourth place was one of a number of students who worked on different aspects of bond strength in composites. Her presentation on the “sheer bond strengths of dual-cure and self-cure core composite materials to dentin” compared a number of composites in current use in the dental school and made recommendations as to the most appropriate practice and training for students.
