Alfred J. Certosimo, D.M.D., M.Ed.

Dr. Fred Certosimo serves as the leader of the Department of General Practice, the largest department at the VCU School of Dentistry. He also lends his service to the profession by setting the bar by which other general practice dentists will be measured.

From 2003 to 2009, Dr. Certosimo was an active member of the American Board of General Dentistry, and he served as vice president from 2007 to 2008 and president from 2008 to 2009. He recently received the prestigious Dr. Frank “Buddy” Borris Award for Distinguished Service at the Academy of General Dentistry meeting in Philadelphia, Pa.

The annual award recognizes members of the dentistry certifying board that embody the characteristics of the award’s namesake – enthusiasm, dedication, commitment, integrity and selflessness. Dr. Certosimo was nominated and selected as the recipient by his peers for his tireless efforts and devotion to advancing the board and its mission.  “This means something special coming from my peers,” said Dr. Certosimo. “To use a Navy term, I feel like I’ve passed muster.”

The American Board of General Dentistry boasts about 1,000 board-certified members, which constitutes one percent of general dentists in the country. Each member must pass a series of rigorous written and oral examinations and make a commitment to continued education to earn board certification status.
