Dentistry alumnus named Rector of VCU Board of Visitors

John C. Doswell II, D.D.S., began his term as rector of the Virginia Commonwealth University Board of Visitors on July 1, succeeding Thomas G. Snead Jr.
Doswell has been a member of the VCU Board of Visitors since 2003. During his tenure on the board, he has served on the Executive Committee, as vice rector and secretary. In addition, he has served on every committee and chaired the Student Affairs, Athletics and International Programs, and the Audit and Compliance committees.
“I am enthusiastic about John’s leadership of the board as we work to advance VCU’s strategic plan, Quest for Distinction,” said VCU President Michael Rao, Ph.D. “I am grateful for his energetic, creative and steadfast involvement with the university and I look forward to working together which such a dynamic, positive and forward-thinking alum.”
Since 1981, Doswell has been a periodontist with a private practice in Richmond, where he lives. He is a 1979 graduate of the VCU School of Dentistry.
An involved alumnus of VCU, Doswell has served on the MCV Alumni Association of VCU board of trustees and as president for two years, as well as the MCV Foundation board of trustees, serving as chair. In addition, he previously was a member of the VCU Health System Authority board of directors, and is a former member of the VCU School of Dentistry advisory board.
“I cannot think of a more pivotal and exhilarating time to serve as rector of this board,” Doswell said. “VCU has an unprecedented spot in the world of academia as a top urban, research university, with great potential and opportunities ahead, and I look forward to being a part of this vision and direction.”
For his support, involvement and dedication to the university, Doswell received the VCU Alumni Star award in 1993 and the Hodges-Kay Service Award in 2007 for outstanding service to the MCV Alumni Association of VCU, the School of Dentistry and VCU.
Doswell has served in numerous professional organizations as well, including the American Dental Association, the Virginia Dental Association, the Richmond Dental Society, the American Academy of Periodontology and the Virginia Society of Periodontists. He is also a fellow of the Virginia Dental Association, the American College of Dentists and the International College of Dentists.
