Kathy White, an early COVID-19 patient at Virginia Commonwealth University medical center, has joined an oversight committee designed to bring the best treatment options to VCU Health system and the Richmond community.

The COVID-19 Clinical Trials Oversight Committee, formed in April, brings together experts from across the health system and university to evaluate and prioritize drug treatment trials. It’s chaired by Wright Center Director F. Gerard Moeller, M.D.

White tested positive for COVID-19 in March. She later shared her story with VCU and talked about her willingness to join the sarilumab trial, one of several ongoing treatment trials.

“I just felt like, that’s the least I could do to contribute to cleaning up this mess,” she said.

When asked to join the committee, White didn’t hesitate.

The committee sought a representative from the community who understood the the unique situation that doctors and researchers find themselves in during this pandemic – fighting a virus with few approved treatments.

White will help assess potential drug treatments for the novel coronavirus and provide valuable patient perspective.
