For my 3rd grade classes, I had a bit of a challenge with my students

following my exact instructions for how to make their artwork. The

assignment was to make a stained glass story using transparencies,

tissue paper, and mod podge. I very clearly broke down and

stressed to each class how to paint the mod podge first, put tissue paper

on top, then mod podge on top of the tissue paper. Yet, I still had students

who didn’t follow my instructions. It was disappointing because they

did the work, the majority understood the content of the lesson, but most of

their artwork didn’t come out how I hoped. After talking and

reflecting with my CT, he reassured me that my lesson and instructions

were clear and that many of the students in the classes who had

sub-par work simply just didn’t listen to me. This also varied with each 3rd grade class I had because I did have

a few classes that listened more than others. However, the artwork in

each class from the students who followed my instructions came out

great. I could tell they really were focused, paid attention to

detail, and I could tell they used their materials well. Here is an example of a student who not only followed

directions but exceeded expectations in their creativity of the project.
