CISMPH Fellowship

Overview

The Center for Integrative Social Medicine and Population Health (CISMPH) Fellowship is a multidisciplinary training initiative designed for undergraduate, medical, public health, and other graduate students, as well as those currently doing gap years and early-career health professionals. The program aims to cultivate a new generation of scholars and practitioners dedicated to advancing health equity by bridging the gap between clinical care and the social, economic, and policy determinants of health. The fellowship will run year-long.

Update (11/30/2025): Thank you to everyone who submitted an application to this year’s CISMPH Fellowship! The application cycle is now officially closed.

Mission and Vision

The Fellowship’s mission is to train future leaders in social medicine and population health who can translate research into meaningful action. Fellows will develop the knowledge, skills, and ethical grounding necessary to address structural inequities, design evidence-based interventions, and advocate for policies aimed at improving population health.

Curriculum and Learning Structure

Fellows participate in a structured curriculum that combines academic rigor with practical engagement. Training modules cover:

  • Social Medicine and Health Equity: Foundations, frameworks, and contemporary challenges.
  • Quantitative Methods: Epidemiology, behavioral economics, and clinical research design.
  • Policy and Advocacy: Translating data into policy briefs, op-eds, and legislative recommendations.
  • Community Engagement: Partnerships with local organizations to advance health equity and social justice.

Interactive seminars, workshops, and speaker series led by faculty and invited experts expose Fellows to emerging issues in healthcare access, harm reduction, and health systems reform.

Research and Scholarly Opportunities

Fellows are integrated into ongoing CISMPH research projects, working alongside faculty and peers to analyze datasets, draft manuscripts, and present findings at conferences. Research topics span substance use disorders and harm reduction, healthcare quality and access, and health system transformation.

Outcomes and Impact

Over the course of the Fellowship, participants will have developed:

  • A strong conceptual understanding of social medicine and population health.
  • Hands-on experience in interdisciplinary research and policy translation.
  • A professional network committed to equity-driven healthcare innovation.

The CISMPH Fellowship equips emerging leaders to confront health disparities with scientific rigor, humanism, and a commitment to justice, aiming to translate knowledge into action for healthier, more equitable communities.
