Whether this is your first time helping your student through relationship issues or you have supported them before, each new relationship can provide new joys and challenges. Students may reach out to you for help navigating new experiences or hardships, and for ways to balance academic progress with new or existing relationships. How can you support your students if you are miles or states away?

One of the most important things you can do is listen. Sometimes talking through why an issue is causing frustration and identifying a cause can be helpful and set your student up to navigate these situations more easily in the future. Sometimes students are not even seeking a solution – they just want to be heard! We also encourage you to direct students to on-campus resources designed to promote wellness and healthy relations. Encourage your student to visit the University Counseling Services website for resources on various relationship topics including:

  • Consent
  • Healthy vs. unhealthy relationships
  • How to handle a breakup
  • Intimate Partner/Domestic Violence
  • Sexual Assault
  • Violence red flags
  • Stalking

Students can also visit University Counseling Services or make an appointment for individual, couples or group therapy, or to join a support group or receive a referral to a community provider.
