To VCU Parents and Families:

As you may know, the city of Richmond will be hosting the 2015 UCI Road World Championships from  Sept. 19-27, 2015.  This is the first time since 1986 that this event will be held in the U.S.  The nine-day cycling event will feature 12 championship races and is a unique opportunity for athletes from 70 countries to represent their nations. Similar to the Olympic Games, the races will broadcast to more than 300 million people.

Below are some important highlights about the event and its impact on your student:

  • Regular classes will not be held on the Monroe Park Campus from Monday, Sept. 21 through Friday, Sept. 25, 2015.  Students on the MCV Campus — in the schools of Allied Health Professions, Dentistry, Medicine, Nursing and Pharmacy — will need to check with their respective academic programs regarding classes as each program’s schedule will be managed separately. Please be assured that academic integrity will not be compromised for any VCU student as adjustments to the calendar have been made, ensuring sufficient classroom contact hours for all students.
  • There are a number of very exciting, one-credit, special-topics courses related to the race that will be offered during the fall semester at a reduced tuition rate of $50 per course. A list of these courses can be found at richmond2015.vcu.edu/courses.html.
  • All residence halls will remain open during the race so that students will have the option to stay on campus and participate in work, meaningful community service, education or event-related activities. Students will also have access to most academic buildings.

You can find out more about the bike race on the university’s website at richmond2015.vcu.edu and follow the races at #TheWorldsatVCU. Please feel free to contact the VCU Parent and Family Helpline if you have additional questions about the race and its impact on your student at (804) 828-7322 or familyprogram@vcu.edu.

This event offers a very exciting opportunity to the VCU and Richmond communities, and we are pleased that your student will be able to experience it with us.
