SAEO Partners with VCU Libraries to Open Sensory Room
In consultative partnership with the Office of Student Accessibility and Educational Opportunity (SAEO), VCU Libraries opened a new sensory room at the James Branch Cabell Library in September 2025. Designed specifically for students with acute sensory needs or sensitivities, the versatile study space can be tailored to individual preferences to reduce discomfort, stress, and anxiety.
To plan the room, the library team studied SAEO’s existing sensory facilities, documented optimal furnishings, and consulted with national peer institutions through the Sensory-Friendly Libraries Discussion Group.
“The design is intended to provide students with an academic environment that will help them center their sensory needs so as to be more academically successful,” said Laura W. Gariepy, Ph.D., former associate dean for research and learning.
