Two VCU School of Social Work alumni were recognized as part of the L. Douglas Wilder School of Government and Public Affairs’ 14th annual Excellence in Virginia Government Awards on April 15, 2021.

‘Friends never leaves me’

John Purnell Jr. (M.S.W.’64/SW; M.P.A.’78/GPA) received the Grace E. Harris Leadership Award. Purnell was executive director of the Friends Association for Children for over 40 years and continues to support the organization. The Health Brigade, celebrating 50 years in Richmond, received the Community Enhancement Award. Accepting on behalf of the organization was Karen Legato (M.S.W.’95/SW), its executive director. Learn more about Health Brigade’s history of commitment in providing exceptional health services to Greater Richmond’s least served, in a caring and non-judgmental environment, in the video below.
