President’s Posts

Michael Rao, Ph.D.

Dear University and VCU Health Colleagues,

We are pleased to inform you that the VCU Health System Authority Board of Directors approved the next phase of the Strategic Master Facility Plan. The plan will help us realize our Vision by Design for VCU Health to be among the premier academic health systems in the nation. The next phase focuses on new construction of a $348 million adult outpatient facility and patient parking deck that will be located at the site of the current Virginia Treatment Center for Children.

The board approval includes $77.3 million in 2018 capital spending for design and initial construction of the new adult outpatient facility and 1,200 space parking deck. The start date is early first quarter 2018 with estimated completion in the first quarter of 2020. A rendering of the building will be forthcoming. Evaluation and scoping for other projects in the strategic facility and capital funding plan continues.

We first introduced plans to reinvent our physical landscape on the health sciences campus in the fall of 2015. After the board’s approval last June, we spent FY 2017 collaborating with hundreds of team members and faculty in the planning and design process. This kind of input is critical to make certain that our improved campus exceeds the expectations of all those we serve. The phased approach of the multi-year facility plan is by design, so we can ensure we are responsible with our resources, while maintaining the high quality, safety and service upon which our foundation is built.

Complementing the construction of clinical care facilities, the university is building facilities to address the needs of our academic missions for education and research. One such facility is the new School of Allied Health Professions, which broke ground in April.

We would like to give special thanks to Deborah Davis, CEO of VCU Hospitals and Clinics, VCU Health System and vice president of clinical services, VCU; and Larry Little, vice president of support services and planning for VCU Health System, for leading this important work of bringing us the new adult outpatient facility that enhances the care experience for our patients and the caring experience for all of our faculty, staff and learners.

We will continue to keep you informed on the progress of our ongoing projects and as the health system board approves additional projects along the way. We thank you for your continued support and collaboration on this exciting and ambitious journey.

Sincerely,

Michael Rao
