President’s Posts

Michael Rao, Ph.D.

Today, VCU lost one of its most talented, creative forces. Claudia Emerson, professor of Creative Writing in the College and Humanities and Sciences, died this morning after a battle with cancer.

A Virginia native, Claudia was renowned as one of the nation’s preeminent poets. The former poet laureate of Virginia, Claudia was the recipient of many prestigious awards, including a Pulitzer Prize for her collection “Late Wife,” a Guggenheim Fellowship and a National Endowment for the Arts Fellowship.

In summer 2013, Claudia joined the VCU family after serving as the Arrington Distinguished Chair in Poetry at the University of Mary Washington.

At VCU, she was known to be dedicated to her students and her creative work, and for being down-to-earth. She was one of the brightest, most creative minds I ever knew, and her loss is profound.

Our thoughts go out to her family, friends, colleagues and students. She will be missed.
