Nationwide, college students report sexual assault, harassment, domestic-dating violence and stalking incidents. Rightly so, federal laws and regulatory guidance have increased a focus on these campus and societal issues, aiming to reduce these incidents by increasing education, transparency and accountability at colleges and universities.

Since Virginia Commonwealth University is committed to establishing a campus culture that is safe and supportive of all of our students, faculty and staff, VCU quickly joined institutions across the country in requiring students to learn about sexual violence, bystander intervention and risk reduction strategies. I also signed a joint declaration with other Virginia colleges and universities to work together to aggressively combat sexual violence on campuses, an important initiative taken by Gov. McAuliffe. Additionally, I have directed a thorough review of current programs to ensure that VCU’s outreach, support and compliance efforts are fully consistent with current state and federal guidance.

In compliance with federal law (Title IX, 20 U.S.C. § 1681(a)), VCU prohibits gender discrimination. Sexual misconduct, including sexual harassment and sexual violence, is a form of gender discrimination prohibited by Title IX. VCU is dedicated to creating a community that encourages the reporting of all incidents of sexual misconduct and the prompt and fair resolution of sexual misconduct complaints. Additional information is available at the Sexual Violence Resource Information website. All students are encouraged to be familiar with the Student Sexual Misconduct Policy. For additional information contact the Deputy Title IX Coordinator in Student Affairs, Dr. Reuban Rodriguez at (804) 828-8940 or rbrodriguez@vcu.edu.

Soon, students will receive instructions from the Student Affairs Division to complete online training that is meant to provide them with the knowledge and skills to contribute to a safer community at VCU. Although it is a rare occasion when the university requires training, this training is vital to student safety and the safety of others, so it is mandatory.

There is nothing more important at VCU than to ensure a safe environment in which all members of our community can learn, live and work.

Through this and other university efforts and resources, we are committed to establishing a campus culture that is safe and supportive of all of our students, faculty and staff.
