E. Claiborne Robins Professor Peter Byron has stepped down as chairman of the VCU School of Pharmacy Department of Pharmaceutics, effective Dec. 31, 2014. Associate professor Douglas Sweet, who joined the faculty in 2008, will serve as interim chairman.

Dean Joseph DiPiro thanked them both for their years of service to the department and the school. “We wish them the best during this transition,” he said.

Byron, who joined the SOP faculty in 1988 as an associate professor, was promoted to professor in 1992. He was named chairman in 1999, as Pharmaceutics and Pharmacy were divided into separate departments.

Since then, the department’s vision and mission have been consolidated, the number of graduate students has nearly quadrupled and Pharmaceutics faculty and students have become well-regarded nationally and internationally for their work in bioanalysis and biomarkers; pharmacokinetics, pharmacodynamics, drug metabolism and transporters; and pulmonary drug delivery.

Byron looks forward to staying on as professor and helping to ensure a smooth transition for his successor. He and Sweet will remain in their respective offices (Sweet in McGuire Hall, Room 205; and Byron in Smith, Room 454A) until a permanent chairman has been named.
