Team VCU SOP wins Stallings College Bowl

Thanks much to Gayle Slifka, who filed the following report on the Oct. 19 Virginia Society of Health-Systems Pharmacists/Jennifer E. Stallings College Bowl. Slifka heads VSHP’s Clinical Skills Competition Committee and is a VCU School of Pharmacy alumna (Pharm.D. ’99):
All of the winning teams from each of the Virginia schools and colleges of pharmacy that won in their respective American Society of Health-Systems Pharmacists Clinical Skills Competitions were invited to compete in the VSHP/Jennifer E. Stallings College Bowl. The competition took place during the VSHP Fall Seminar at the Sheraton Norfolk Waterside Hotel. Regrettably, Appalachian College of Pharmacy could not compete this year.
The College Bowl was based on a real patient case and included realistic drug-therapy issues that are encountered in day-to-day clinical practice.
The teams from Hampton University School of Pharmacy, Shenandoah University’s Bernard J. Dunn School of Pharmacy and VCU School of Pharmacy each evaluated the overall case and the patient’s current therapy, identified and prioritized the therapeutic problems and treatment goals, then created a care plan and presented it for review before a five-judge panel.

All of the Pharm.D. candidates did a really great job in assessing the case and presented well. It was a delight to see the candidates’ confidence as they presented their cases.
The winning team of David Allen and Tiffany VanDervort from VCU School of Pharmacy was announced during the VSHP Fall Seminar’s Annual Awards Banquet. Allen and VanDervort represented the school with honor, talent and pride. They each won a reference book donated by Lexi-Comp and $500 for travel expenses to the 2012 ASHP Midyear Meeting & Exhibition in Las Vegas in December.
2012 College Bowl judges were Slifka of Pfizer in Richmond; VSHP President Francine Farnsworth, VA Medical Center in Wilmington, Del.; Kelly Rose, VA Medical Center in Staunton; Carl Tullio, assistant professor at Hampton University; and guest judge Amanda Schmig, VA Medical Center in Salem.
VCU alumna Leigh Anne Hylton Gravatt (Pharm.D. ’03) is faculty advisor for the SVSHP, the Student Chapter of the Virginia Society of Health-System Pharmacists, and Abbie Arches is president.
The VSHP College Bowl, now renamed the Jennifer E. Stallings College Bowl, is a scholarship fund developed to offer financial support for travel and registration for the winning team(s) to attend the annual ASHP Midyear Clinical Skills Competition. Visit http://www.vshp.org/ and click on the “Stallings Fund” tab for more details on how to make your tax-deductible contribution to the fund. Stallings, a 1997 VCU School of Pharmacy alumna, died in 2008. An active member of VSHP, she had envisioned the original concept for the competition.
In addition, please note the results of VCU School of Pharmacy’s 2012 Clinical Skills Competition: In addition to the winning team of Allen and VanDervort, runners-up were Jeff Beall and Lauren Cherry. Rounding out the top four teams were Christopher DeMella and Lindsay Donohue, and Cat Floroff and Ashley Higbea. The written portion took place Sept. 24, followed by the oral portion Oct. 1.
