The Virginia Pharmacists Association presented its annual awards at the 131st Annual Convention in August. The four-day event took place at the Wyndham Virginia Beach Oceanfront Hotel.

Fourth-year VCU School of Pharmacy student Derek Mires was presented the VPhA Research and Education Foundation Student award during the general membership meeting and lunch.

Alumni and faculty recognized during the Installation and Awards Banquet included:

Kurt Bell (B.S. ’95): National Community Pharmacists Association Leadership Award.
Tana Kaefer (Pharm.D. ‘04): Ilene B. Stiff Local Association President’s Award
Lauren Caldas (Pharm.D. ‘11): Pharmacists Mutual Distinguished Young Pharmacist Award
Phylliss Moret, assistant dean for experiential education: Ed. D. Spearbeck Virginia Pharmacists Service Award
Johnny Moore (B.S. ‘71): Cardinal Health Generation Rx Champions Award
Empsy Munden (B.S. ’72): Bowl of Hygeia Award

Bell also was welcomed during a President’s Reception as the 2012-13 VPhA president. President-elect is SOP alumnus Ron Davis (B.S. ‘73), and secretary-treasurer is Holly Morris (B.S. ’95). Immediate past president is David Creecy V (B.S. ’77). SOP alums who are VPhA regional directors include John Seymour (B.S. ’83), Region E; Sam Clay (B.S. ’77), Region H; and Lindsay Spires (Pharm.D. ’08), Region I.

Among this year’s SOP-related convention speakers were Virginia Walker (B.S. ’81) with “Impact of Clinical Pharmacy Services on Underserved HIV Positive Populations in Rural Virginia”; Dennis Stanley (B.S. ‘74) with “Immunizations Update”; Punam Patel, assistant professor, with “New Therapeutic Options for Hepatitis C Virus Infection”; Gary Matzke, associate dean for clinical research and public policy, with “Pharmacy Practice Transformation: In Virginia and Around the World”; Tom Reinders, associate dean for admissions and student services, with “Students and New Practitioners: CV and Resumes”; Mark Johnson (B.S. ‘87, Pharm.D. ‘93) with “New Drug Update”; and Caroline Juran (B.S. ’95) with “Virginia Board of Pharmacy Update.”

Also, Moret and Brenda Smith (B.S. ’87) were leaders for “A Preceptor Workshop: Providing Feedback and Evaluating Students,” a separate continuing education program.

VPhA Executive Director Tim Musselman helmed the NASPA/NMA Student Pharmacist Self-Care Championship. Musselman was the VCU School of Pharmacy Preceptor of the Year for 2010-11.

An alumni and friends reception was sponsored by VCU School of Pharmacy, Appalachian College of Pharmacy, Hampton University School of Pharmacy and Shenandoah University’s Bernard J. Dunn School of Pharmacy.
