VCU School of Pharmacy hosts its 15th Annual Pharmaceutical Sciences Research and Career Day 8 a.m.-2:40 p.m. Oct. 12 at the Larrick Student Center, 900 Turpin St.

This year’s guest speaker, F. He received the 2012 Alfred Burger Award in Medicinal Chemistry, and his previous positions at RTI have included vice president for the Chemistry and Life Sciences Unit and director of the Center for Organic and Medicinal Chemistry, Chemistry and Life Sciences Group.

The Thakker Award, recognizing outstanding achievement
by a graduate student in the Department of Pharmaceutics,
is presented each year during Research and Career Day.

Research and Career Day offers graduate and Pharm.D. students and postdoctoral fellows the opportunity to develop the skills and contacts needed to find jobs in academia, the pharmaceutical industry and government. Visiting scientists will be available to meet with students, and classes on career development will be offered. The event will showcase student poster presentations; the best graduate and best Pharm.D. posters will be recognized. Student podium presentations and mock interviews also will be featured.

The event is free, with advance registration required by Oct. 1. Breakfast and lunch are included, as well as a post-event reception in honor of School of Pharmacy Professor Bill Barr, who was integral to the molding of what is now known as the Pharmaceutical Sciences Graduate Programs.

One week prior to Research and Career Day, students will participate in a daylong workshop offering sessions on “Finding a Postdoctoral or Fellowship Position With a Pharm.D. and/or Ph.D.” (Richard A. Glennon and Mary Jayne Kennedy), “FDA Fellowship Opportunities” (Satjit Brar), “Interviewing and CV Workshop” (Tom Reinders and Susanna Wu-Pong), “Looking Beyond the Traditional Pathways for Exciting Career Opportunities” (MohamadI Sarkar) and “Nontraditional Career Paths: Licensing and IP Management” (Rebecca Caffrey).
