VCU School of Nursing dean to receive one of NLN’s highest honors
The National League for Nursing announced this week that Jean Giddens, Ph.D., RN, FAAN, dean and professor, Doris B. Yingling Endowed Chair at the VCU School of Nursing, will receive one of its highest honors on Sept. 16 at the 2017 NLN Education Summit in San Diego, California.
Giddens, selected from a competitive field of nominees, will receive the NLN Mary Adelaide Nutting Award for Outstanding Teaching or Leadership in Nursing Education. Named after a noted educator, administrator and author considered the world’s first professor of nursing, the award is presented to an NLN member who leads through scholarly activities, contributes as a leader in nursing education, encourages creative interactions with students from diverse backgrounds, mentors and serves as a role model for junior faculty, and publishes scholarly works that advance nursing education knowledge.
In addition to receiving the Mary Adelaide Nutting Award, Giddens will be inducted as a Fellow of the NLN Academy of Nursing Education, also considered an outstanding recognition of excellence in nursing education.
“I am truly honored to be recognized for this award and humbled to be in the company of such distinguished past recipients,” Giddens said. “This award really represents the collective efforts of nurse educators across the country who make a difference. “
A nationally recognized expert in nursing education, curricula and evaluation, Giddens joined the School of Nursing in July 2013. She previously held various leadership positions at the University of New Mexico College of Nursing.
Known for significantly influencing nursing education nationally and for developing innovative teaching and learning strategies, Giddens has been actively engaged with the Future of Nursing Campaign for Action through her involvement with academic progression in nursing on the national level as well as with state action coalitions in New Mexico and in Virginia. She is the author of multiple journal articles, nursing textbooks, and electronic media and serves as an education consultant to nursing programs throughout the country. Giddens is also an alumna of the Robert Wood Johnson Executive Nurse Fellows Program and the American Association of Colleges of Nursing Wharton Executive Leadership Program.
She received a B.S.N. degree from the University of Kansas, an M.S.N. degree from University of Texas, El Paso, and a Ph.D. from Colorado State University.
