The VCU School of Nursing and the Institute for Women’s Health have partnered to present Ina May Gaskin, MA, CPM, known nationwide as “the mother of authentic midwifery,” on Monday, Nov 7. Gaskin will speak from noon to 1 p.m. in Younger Auditorium. She is the founder and director of the Farm Midwifery Center, located near Summertown, Tennessee. The Center has attracted nationwide attention for its low rates of intervention, mortality and morbidity despite the inclusion of many vaginally delivered breeches, twin and grand multiparas. Author of the acclaimed book Spiritual Midwifery, Gaskin is the first midwife to have an obstetric maneuver, the Gaskin Maneuver, named after her. All VCU faculty, staff, students and alumni are invited to attend the lecture.
