A group of four nursing students from the University of Cordoba (UCO) in Spain delivered their final presentation this week at the VCU School of Nursing. The UCO students participated in a four-week exchange program that provided the opportunity for them to learn about the health care system and nursing education in the U.S.

During their presentation, the UCO students focused on differences between U.S. and Spanish nursing education and nurses’ roles in the respective health systems. For example, the students highlighted specific differences, such as the wide use of technology in the U.S., as well as the security of medication and the number of patients in the clinical setting. According to the students, Spanish hospitals utilize mainly handwritten records and have less secure storage areas for medications. They also stated that the nurses in Spain have more patients than nurses have in the U.S.

The students also discussed their “Healthy Selfie” campaign, which promotes healthy teeth brushing habits among Spanish children. They created a video and a Facebook page with the hashtag #selfiesano for the project.

During their time at VCU, the UCO students participated in clinicals at VCU Health, Richmond Behavioral Health Authority and the VCU Center for Healthy Hearts. They also toured the School of Nursing’s Clinical Learning Center, worked on scenarios with high-fidelity patient simulators and attended the school’s inaugural Feierstein Lecture on advancing nursing image and practice.

During their leisure time, students participated in various activities, including jazz night at the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts and trips to Williamsburg and Virginia Beach.
