VCU School of Nursing holds nursing camp for high school students
Several high school students from across the state had the opportunity to learn firsthand about nursing through a summer camp offered by the VCU School of Nursing in partnership with VCU Health.
Established 12 years ago, the Nursing Explorations program was created to give high school students the opportunity to explore various fields in nursing and gain hands-on experience in various units. The program allows students to gain an understanding on various roles in nursing, observe a nurse at work, and obtain information on how to get into a nursing program.
During their three-day visit, the students attended a CPR training class, toured the School of Nursing, visited the emergency department and an operating room at VCU Medical Center, and heard from several nurses and nursing students on why they chose to enter the field.
The high school students were led by Marisa Cosco Taylor, M.S.W., RN to B.S. advisor with the School of Nursing; Theresa Erichsen, RN, clinical nurse at VCU Health; Karen Hill-Holliday, Ph.D., RN (M.S.’93/N; Ph.D.’09/N) career counseling nurse at VCU Health; Jennifer Sulanke, RN (M.S.’03/N) nurse clinician, and Lauren Prosser, RN (B.S.’06/N) clinical coordinator, who both work in the Neuroscience Intensive Care Unit at VCU Health.
