Program: The Role of the Coordinator in Promoting Quality Clinical Research

Speaker: Betsy Ripley, MD, MS

This program will utilize the Office of Research Integrity (ORI) interactive video “The Research Clinic” to discuss the coordinators role in conducting quality research. The implications of poor choices will be discussed in light of the impact on the participant, the coordinator, the investigator, the institution, and the study outcomes. Brainstorming for solutions to difficult situations will provide usable methods and knowledge for coordinators and other research staff.
1. After viewing and discussing the interactive video you will state the definition of research misconduct and its implications.
2. During the session you will generate problem solving skills to manage stressful situations that coordinators face in conducting clinical research.
3. Following the session you will understand resources available to assist in daily conduct of clinical research.

About the Speaker:
Betsy Ripley, MD, MS is a Professor of Medicine in the Division of Nephrology at VCU. She has more than 25 years of experience with clinical research at VCU. She has conducted clinical trials in hypertension and chronic kidney disease and clinical research in the area of research ethics and responsible conduct of research. She has served in the past as the Associate Director of the General Clinical Research Center and the Executive Director of the Clinical Research Services. She has served on the VCU IRB for the past 12 years and is the Senior Chair for the VCU IRB system. Her newest role as the first VCU Clinical Research Compliance Officer is building an office to assist and monitor VCU and VCUHS faculty held IND’s and IDE’s. She is also leading the effort to formalize a VCU Clinical Research Quality System.

CEU: 1.5 CEU will be offered for this presentation for SOCRA members. SOCRA members will receive a certificate of attendance.
