Residential Life and Housing has important reminders and updates regarding fire alarms in the residence halls.

Reminders:

  • Please be prepared for a fire drill during the first week of classes.
Per the Fire Prevention Code, VCU Residential Life and Housing is required to perform four fire drills annually. Two of the fire drills must be within the first ten days of classes at the start of each semester. All Residents must evacuate during these drills, which are performed by VCU Fire and Safety.
  • Exit the buildings safely.
In the event of a fire alarm sounding, leave the area immediately, proceed to the nearest exit or emergency exit, and leave the building. Do not attempt to utilize elevators. It is against the law to remain in a building during a scheduled, non-scheduled, or emergency fire alarm evacuation. Follow all RLH staff and/or emergency responder instructions and visit housing.vcu.edu/help/safety for a list of fire evacuation locations.

Updates:

  • RLH has created a “GO, PAUSE, STOP” re-entry procedure to make re-entering the halls more efficient.
Residents will line up in lines that are either:
    • GO (green) if they have both their room key AND their VCUCard,
    • PAUSE (yellow) if they have only their room key OR their VCUCard,
    • or STOP (red) if they do NOT have their room key OR VCUCard.

For additional information please review the Residence Hall Safety and Security section of the Guide to Residential Living, starting on page 8.
