SENT ON WEDNESDAY, JAN. 8, 2025

Message to new residents and residents of Brandt, GRC, GRC III, The Honors College, and Rhoads Halls:

Residential Life and Housing hopes that you had a rejuvenating winter break.

This message is about your move in being affected by the ongoing City of Richmond water issue.

Due to these issues and anticipated winter weather this weekend, VCU Residential Life and Housing is delaying new resident move-in and the opening of Brandt, GRC, GRC III, The Honors College, and Rhoads Halls move-in until Sunday, Jan. 12 at noon. We will monitor the water restoration process and impending weather and will send updates as necessary.

We apologize for the inconvenience; however, we are prioritizing student safety while managing two issues – water and weather – that are uncertain and not in our control.

Please continue to see https://alert.vcu.edu/ for more information about campus operations. If you have any questions or concerns please email [email protected].

Message to upperclass residents (not including residents of Ackell):

We appreciate your patience and flexibility as VCU navigates the ongoing City of Richmond water issue.

Because of uncertainty about the city’s water restoration process – as well as concerns regarding inclement weather anticipated this weekend – if you have not returned to campus, we encourage you to delay your return until Sunday, Jan. 12

We will monitor the water restoration process and impending weather and will send updates as necessary.

If you are currently on campus, we would like to remind you of the resources available:

  • Free water is available in the West Grace North fireplace lounge (830 W. Grace St.), Ackell Residence Center game room (1100 W. Broad St.) and Cary & Belvidere lobby (301 W. Cary St.) while supplies last. Each on-campus resident may pick up half of a case of water (approximately 20 bottles). Please bring something to transport your water.
  • We are installing temporary portable toilets in residence hall courtyards to assist residents who are currently on campus.

Once water pressure is restored to your buildings, FMD will enter your residential space to test the shower, toilet, sink, and washing machine. Please ensure that you empty your washing machine of any items or FMD will move your items to test your washing machine.

VCU anticipates that a boil water notice may be in effect for up to 48 hours after water is restored to campus.  To help residents on campus, important tips are below:

  • Before consuming any water from the tap in your kitchen or bathroom, it must be boiled for three minutes to be safely consumed.
  • Do not drink from water fountains in the residence halls.
  • Do not use tap water to make drinks, juices, or fountain soft drinks.
  • Do not wash your dishes using tap water – use boiled water or use paper plates for the next few days.
  • Do not brush your teeth with tap water – use boiled or bottled water.
  • Limit the amount of times you flush your toilet. You may add water to the toilet tank (the part behind the toilet bowl) to flush it.

We apologize for the inconvenience; however, we are prioritizing student safety while managing two issues – water and weather – that are uncertain and not in our control.

Message to residents of Ackell Residence Center:

We appreciate your patience and flexibility as VCU navigates the ongoing City of Richmond water issue.

Because of uncertainty about the city’s water restoration process – and its impact on generating and maintaining heat for your building – as well as concerns regarding inclement weather anticipated this weekend, if you have not returned to campus, we encourage you to delay your return until Sunday, Jan. 12

We will monitor the water restoration process and impending weather and will send updates as necessary. If you are currently on campus in Ackell, we would like to remind you of the resources available:

  • Temporary beds have been set up within the classrooms of West Grace North for Ackell residents only. Gender-specific and gender-inclusive spaces are available, with each student assigned to their own bed. If you would like to utilize a temporary bed, please come to the West Grace North lobby with your VCU ID and your bedding to be assigned a bed in one of these community spaces beginning tonight, Jan 8 at 5 pm. If at all possible we ask that you check in by midnight tonight.
  • The classroom spaces in West Grace North are also available to Ackell residents during the day. Ackell residents also have access to all other open VCU residence hall common spaces (Broad & Belvidere, Cary & Belvidere, Grace & Broad, West Grace North, and West Grace South) and can spend time in first-floor common areas.
