College of Engineering professor receives prestigious early career award from United States government

Nathaniel Kinsey, Ph.D., Engineering Foundation Associate Professor of electrical and computer engineering at Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU), has been selected for the Presidential Early Career Award for Scientists and Engineers (PECASE), the highest honor bestowed by the U.S. government to outstanding scientists and engineers beginning their independent research careers.
The award, established by President Clinton in 1996 and announced by the White House Office of Scientific Policy, recognizes researchers who demonstrate exceptional leadership potential and innovative developments in science and technology. Kinsey joins nearly 400 federally-funded early career scientists honored in this year’s cohort.
“Being selected for the PECASE is an amazing and humbling accomplishment,” said Kinsey. “I am thankful for all of the friends, family, students, mentors and colleagues who have supported me and believed in me. In today’s world, it is easy to get caught up in hype and metrics to measure worth. In my team, we work hard to operate in this environment, but not be defined by it. We want to stay true to our goal in academia, to explore interesting and impactful problems, share our results with others and to be open about the strengths and weaknesses.”
Recipients of PECASE are selected for their innovative research contributions, commitment to community service and their potential to advance the frontiers of scientific knowledge. The award aims to enhance connections between fundamental research and broader societal impacts while highlighting the critical importance of science and technology for the nation’s future.
