This September, Keysight Technologies generously donated over $80,000 worth of equipment to the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE). Leading the field in electronics testing and measurement solutions, Keysight Technologies’ donation helps students have access to the most up-to-date technology actively being used in the industry.

“Over 80% of ECE courses have a lab component where students engage in experiments to deepen their understanding of topics such as circuit design, electromagnetics and communications,” said Alen Docef, Ph.D., associate professor and associate chair in the electrical and computer engineering department.

The space where this equipment was donated, the ECE garage, is used by students as a collaborative space to work on everything from coursework to their Capstone (senior design) projects. In addition, student organizations and Vertically Integrated Project (VIP) teams use the space to work on projects for competitions, independent study assignments and personal projects.

Equipment donated consisted of 20 sets of standard electrical engineering laboratory instruments, with each set consisting of the following:

  • A DC power supply, used to power electrical circuits.
  • A digital multimeter, used to measure parameters of circuits, such as voltages, currents, resistor resistances, capacitor capacitances and temperatures.
  • An oscilloscope, used to measure and visualize currents and voltages that vary in time.
  • A function generator, used to produce time-varying signals with various shapes, such as sinusoids, rectangular pulses, triangular pulses and arbitrary-shaped waveforms.

“Keysight is a leading global manufacturer of electronic test and measurement equipment and software standing at the forefront of innovation in the industry,” said Erdem Topsakal, Ph.D., the senior associate dean for strategic initiatives and enrollment management. “Their products are utilized by thousands of prestigious universities worldwide. Their donation is a testament to the value they place on the education we provide and the exceptional quality of our students in the College of Engineering. Our students will greatly benefit from this contribution, and we eagerly anticipate a continued and fruitful partnership.”

The Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering provides undergraduate and graduate students with the opportunity to perform real-world research as soon as they enroll.
