Sponsored by the Build Back Better Regional Challenge, Pharmaceutical Manufacturing Day brought together students, researchers and industry partners interested in advancing the pharmaceutical manufacturing industry. The day-long event, which took place on Sept. 6 2024, consisted of talks, interactive discussions, technical presentations and a poster session, all centered around the theme of Translating Pharmaceutical Manufacturing: Innovations from the Bench to Communities.

Bridging the gap between scientific findings and the broader public is the central concept of Innovations from the Bench to Communities, remembering the goal of pharmaceutical manufacturing is to improve health outcomes for all. A key part of ensuring the health of our communities can be done by translating complex scientific research and developments into language and strategies that folks outside the scientific community can understand and utilize.

Author and keynote speaker, Rosemary Gibson, opened the event with a talk on what pharmaceutical manufacturing means to communities. She emphasized the importance of domestic manufacturing to address quality control concerns in life-saving medicines.

Invited speakers addressed the integration of community into research framework, access to safe and affordable medicines, machine learning in pharmaceutical development and Virginia as a leader in pharmaceutical manufacturing.

In 2022, stakeholders in the Richmond-Petersburg region, including Virginia Commonwealth University, were awarded nearly $53 million as winners of the Build Back Better Regional Challenge. This funding, which came from the U.S. Department of Commerce’s Economic Development Administration, has gone toward pharmaceutical manufacturing research and development.

Funding from the Build Back Better Regional Challenge has made events like Pharmaceutical Manufacturing Day possible.
