Rosemary Gibson

The VCU College of Engineering announced author Rosemary Gibson as the keynote speaker for the 2024 Pharmaceutical Manufacturing Day to be held on Friday, September 6, 2024. 

Gibson currently serves as senior advisor at a bioethics research institute, The Hastings Center and is an editor at The Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) Internal Medicine. She is also board chair at Altarum Institute, a non-profit health systems research group; board member of the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education; and served on the Clinical Learning Environment Review (CLER) Evaluation Committee to advance patient safety in teaching hospitals.

Her most recent publication, China Rx: Exposing the Risks of America’s Dependence on

China for Medicine, explores the shift in where medicines are made and the implications this has on the future of U.S. health security. Her other books, Wall of Silence, Treatment Trap, Battle Over Health Care and Medicare Meltdown, examine behind-the-scenes forces that shape health care today. 

Gibson’s extensive research and insights into healthcare earned her the highest honor from the American Medical Writers Association for outstanding contributions to reporting on critical health issues in the public interest. 

During her time with the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, a national nonprofit dedicated to breaking down institutional barriers to healthcare, Gibson architected a $200 million nationwide strategy to establish inpatient palliative care programs in hospitals. This program increased the number of palliative care programs in acute care facilities from 10 to nearly 2,000 from 1999 to 2018, earning her the Lifetime Achievement Award from the American Academy of Hospice and Palliative Medicine.

There will be a mix of invited talks, technical presentations and a poster session, all focusing on the topic of Translating Pharmaceutical Manufacturing: Innovations from the Bench to Communities.
