Rachita Sowle, Ph.D. and Thomas Gyeera, Ph.D. bring their extensive industry and academic experience to the Department of Computer Science this fall. The pair join the VCU College of Engineering as new faculty members.

Sowle comes to VCU after finishing her Ph.D. in computer science at Virginia Tech. Her research has centered on bipartite matching, data structures, algorithm development and graph theory. At Virginia Tech, Sowle taught courses such as Algorithms and Data Structures and Analysis of Algorithms while serving as a research assistant for the past five years. Her background in academia, applied science, and research and development engineering within computer science emphasizes the range of knowledge and expertise she will bring to the college of engineering.

Gyeera received his Ph.D. in computer science from the University of Sheffield in 2019. Before pursuing postgraduate studies, he worked in industry for the Ford Motor company and Thales Group as an application engineer. He previously developed and taught courses in programming and data mining at the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth. Gyeera’s research interests and work center around artificial intelligence, machine learning, cloud computing, application development, network engineering and big data.

“I am delighted that Sowle and Gyeera have joined the computer science department,” Azim Eskandarian, Alice T. and Wiliam H. Goodwin Jr. Dean of Engineering, said. “The addition of such talented faculty adds to our strong portfolio of outstanding professors and researchers covering emerging topics, such as artificial intelligence, data science, and cybersecurity.”

The Department of Computer Science provides undergraduate and graduate students with the opportunity to perform real-world research as soon as they enroll. From designing algorithms to solving complex computing problems to working with cutting-edge AI technology, students gain understanding of many important computing topics.
