Clara Spatafore, D.D.S., M.S., interim dean and chair of the Departments of Endodontics and Oral Health Sciences at VCU School of Dentistry

On this day, our great nation comes together to both honor and remember the sacrifices, service and dedication of the heroic men and women of the Armed Forces. I am truly humbled when I think back to all the sacrifices members of the military and their families have made over the years to make this country the greatest in the world.

I joined the United State Navy when I graduated from my Endodontic Program. I had done all of my training at West Virginia University and felt I needed a different perspective on dentistry. I picked the Navy because all of the duty stations were by bodies of water. Next to going into dentistry, it was one of the best professional decisions of my life. The experience expanded my dental education and introduced me to future friends from all over the U.S. But, most of all, it deepened my respect, admiration and undying gratitude to all the men and women who serve this country on a daily basis. They put service ahead of their family, personal needs and financial gain, and occasionally they make the ultimate sacrifice.

I saw an anonymous quote that sums up my view on veterans: “This nation will remain the land of the free only so long as it is the home of the brave.”

Below are just a few of the many current and former members of the military among our ranks here at VCU School of Dentistry. Thanks to all of our veterans for their service, sacrifice and continued commitment to our country.
