VCU School of Dentistry Community,
Recent and pending high-profile jury trials have elicited strong reactions here and across the country. I reflected over the weekend on the variety of emotions that members of the SoD community are experiencing. Understandably, many are asking questions about equity, the prevalence of weapons and violence in our society as well as the kind of world in which we want to live.
A few things I know: Violence is never the answer. Hate will not be tolerated. We are stronger together.
We are comprised of outstanding individuals from all walks of life, each following a different path to VCU School of Dentistry. There may be times when we don’t see eye to eye, but there is no doubt that we are stronger because of our unique backgrounds, our differences of thought and the diversity we have within our community. Now, more than ever, we must listen to each other and work together to understand the reasons behind our diverse feelings. We must also accept that others’ feelings are just as valid and meaningful as our own.
Our school and our profession exists to improve the oral health of the communities we serve. We cannot accomplish this goal without trust, and trust is earned through compassion and understanding. As we continue to process our emotions, let’s move forward with kindness and allow our shared commitment to the health and wellbeing of all be the guide for our words and actions.
