Dean's blog

Lyndon F. Cooper | School of Dentistry

I am pleased to announce that Dr. Iain Morgan has assumed the additional role as interim Associate Dean for Research in the School of Dentistry.  Morgan carried out his PhD work at the Beatson Institute for Cancer Research in Glasgow, Scotland. He then moved to the lab of Dr. Peter Vogt, an eminent cancer researcher, at the University of Southern California in Los Angeles for his post-doctoral work. During this time the Vogt lab moved to The Scripps Research Institute in La Jolla. His post-doctoral work focused on increasing our understanding of the c-Jun proto-onocogene and it’s viral counterpart v-Jun. Following his post-doctoral work he returned to the UK to work in industry but decided to leave after a year and return to the Beatson Institute in Glasgow for a position as a senior scientist. This was in 1995 when he first began working on papillomaviruses. In 2000 he moved to a tenure track position in the University of Glasgow obtaining tenure in 2003 and promotion to full professor in 2007, during which time he established an internationally recognized research group working on papillomaviruses. During his time at the University of Glasgow Morgan served as a Research Dean, Head of Department, and Dean for Graduate Studies at various times. in 2013 he took up his current position at VCU School of Dentistry as Director of the Philips Institute for Oral Health Research and Chair of Oral and Craniofacial Molecular Biology.

Dr. Morgan’s leadership of the Philips Institute has contributed greatly to our increase in sponsored programs support for research and moving our school into the top 25 of National Institutes of Health funded dental schools.  We are on track to move into the top 20 with a goal of top 15.  I want to also thank Dr. Harvey Schenkein for his many years for leadership as associate dean and his contributions to our successful research program.
