Lyndon F. Cooper | School of Dentistry

Dr. Sharon K. Lanning completed her undergraduate degree from Canisius College, her Doctor of Dental Surgery from State University of New York at Buffalo, and her certificate in Periodontology from Virginia Commonwealth University. Dr. Lanning is currently a tenured, Professor at Virginia Commonwealth University, School of Dentistry and Core Faculty with the Center for Interprofessional Education and Collaborative Care. She is a practicing board certified periodontist of the American Academic of Periodontology.  Dr. Lanning is a teacher and scholar developing instructional innovations and investigating their effectiveness through evaluation of student learning outcomes.  She is a published author of peer-reviewed journals focusing on higher and health science education. Dr. Lanning has presented at a number of annual conferences including the American Academy of Periodontology, American Dental Education Association, and All Together Better Health. She has also completed extensive professional development programs through the University of Michigan, School of Medicine; Academy of Academic Leadership, Institute of Teaching and Learning; American Dental Education Association, Leadership Institute; and Stanford University, Faculty Development Center. Dr. Lanning serves as an American Dental Education Association, Change and Innovation in Dental Education liaison. Dr. Lanning has received teaching awards and recognized with the WISDM, Annual Professional Development Award and American College of Dentists, Outstanding Faculty Award.  

I want to thank Dr. Tom Koertge for serving as interim chair this past year.  Dr. Koertge will continue to serve as vice-chair under Dr. Lanning’s leadership.  A search is underway for chair of the department.
