Lyndon F. Cooper | School of Dentistry

I am writing to let you know about two leadership changes in the School of Dentistry.  Dr. Karan Replogle will be stepping down as the Chair of the Department of Endodontics at the end of this week.  I am pleased to announce that Dr. Rick Archer has agreed to accept the position of interim department chair.  Dr. Replogle will continue to serve as the Director of Advanced Education Program in Endodontics.

Dr. Archer earned his D.D.S. degree from The University of Maryland School of Dentistry in 1982.  He was sponsored by the United States Navy for specialty training and graduated from The Ohio State University College of Dentistry in 1990 with a Certificate in Endodontics and a M.S. degree. Following eleven years as a Navy Dental Officer, Dr. Archer was active in private practice for 17 years in Chesapeake, Virginia.

While teaching in the Navy GPR program at Naval Hospital Portsmouth, Virginia, Dr. Archer served as a part-time faculty member at the VCU School of Dentistry. He continued as an adjunct faculty member for 19 years before joining our faculty fulltime in 2009.  Dr. Archer achieved his board certification in 2011 and is a Diplomate of The American Board of Endodontics.

Since joining the faculty, Dr. Archer has worked extensively in preparing dental students for the licensure board examinations.  He worked with both Acadental Inc. and the Southern Regional Testing Agency to develop a simulated plastic tooth that could replace extracted teeth for endodontic procedure testing.  This tooth was successfully implemented into the examination this year.   Dr. Archer was recently appointed to the Examination Committee of the American Board of Dental Examiners.

We are extremely fortunate to have Dr. Archer on the faculty and wish him continued success in this new role.  Thank you, Dr. Archer, for your contributions to our great school.

Dr. Karan Replogle received her dental degree in 1992 followed by a Certificate in Endodontics and M.S. degree in 1994 from The Ohio State University.  She opened a private practice limited to endodontics in Dayton, Ohio where she practiced until moving to Virginia in 2004.  Dr. Replogle joined the VCU faculty as the Director of Predoctoral Endodontics in 2004.  In 2006, she assumed the role of Director of Advanced Education Program in Endodontics and Interim Department Chair.  In 2009, she became Department Chair and has served since then in the dual role of Department Chair and Program Director.  While serving in this dual role, the endodontics program accreditation was reaffirmed by the Commission on Dental Accreditation in 2010. The department established an Endodontics Program Advisory Board and has reconnected with its alumni.  During Dr. Replogle six year’s of service as program director and chair, 24 residents have graduated with certificates and master’s degrees.

We are pleased Dr. Replogle will be continuing as our program director.   These administrative changes will permit her to dedicate her time to our endodontics program.  Thank you Dr. Replogle, for your service and contributions to the School of Dentistry.
