Lyndon F. Cooper | School of Dentistry

As Director of Student Recruitment in the school’s Admissions Department, Dr. Susie Goolsby greatly enhanced our recruitment and application success, particularly for underrepresented minority students. She served in this role while managing her ongoing appointment in the Department of General Practice.

I want to thank her for her important work as she makes a new career transition.

Dr. Susie Goolsby

I am happy to announce that Dr. Goolsby has rejoined the Department of General Practice and has assumed leadership of GPG-5. Along with Dr. Mark Barry, chair of general practice, I am extremely pleased that she has taken on this new role, which adds to her significant academic accomplishments and supports her career goals.

Dr. Pettiette and I will work on a plan to support student recruitment and Pipeline Programs. Dr. Goolsby will continue to lead the Thrive program.

Susie Goolsby earned a bachelor’s degree from Hampton University in 1989, with a major in biology. She is a VCU School of Dentistry alumna and earned a Doctor of Dental Surgery in 1993. In 1994, she completed a Postgraduate Advanced Education in General Dentistry Residency Program at Howard University.

In 2013, she earned a master’s in Health Administration from the VCU School of Allied Health.

After her AEGD residency, Dr. Goolsby worked as an independent contractor in private practice and in a community health clinic, both in New Orleans. In 1999, she opened a solo practice in the rural city of Thibodaux, Louisiana, where she practiced until her appointment to assistant professor at the VCU School of Dentistry in 2009. She was promoted to associate professor in 2018.

Her interest in caries management stems from her days in private and community practice in Louisiana. She is active in cariology at the national and international levels. As a contributor for the ADEA Pre-Conference Cariology Curriculum Workshop in 2015, she is listed as an author on the publication, “Development of a Core Curriculum Framework in Cariology for U.S. Dental Schools.” It was selected as one of the top 10 articles in the Journal of Dental Education for 2016.

Also in 2016, Dr. Goolsby shared first authorship with Dr. Douglas Young of the University of the Pacific for their efforts in creating effective rules for the calibration of dental faculty in caries risk assessment. Collaborating with colleagues at VCU, Dr. Goolsby contributed to an article about Silver Diamine Fluoride at the time of its FDA approval and entry in the U.S. market.

In 2013, she served as a VCU representative and contributor to the Global Collaboratory on Caries Management from which the International Caries Classification and Management System was authored. She served as reviewer for the Journal of Dental Education, elected to the Board of Directors for the national CAMBRA Coalition, and elected the ADEA Cariology Section Secretary.

Most recently, Dr. Goolsby was selected as a Fellow in the ADEA Leadership Institute and named recipient of the ADEA/Colgate-Palmolive/NDA Jeanne Sinkford Scholarship.

Please join me in congratulating Dr. Goolsby in her new role and for her continued career excellence.
