Sharon K. Lanning, D.D.S., has been named chair of the Department of Periodontics. Prior her July 1 appointment, she served as interim chair.

Dr. Lanning brings a wealth of clinical and academic experience to the chair role. She has been a leader in dental education and inter-professional health sciences education. Please join me in congratulating her in this well-deserved appointment.

Lanning completed her undergraduate degree from Canisius College, her Doctor of Dental Surgery from State University of New York at Buffalo, and her certificate in Periodontology from Virginia Commonwealth University. Dr. Lanning is currently a tenured professor at the School of Dentistry and Core Faculty with the Center for Interprofessional Education and Collaborative Care.

A practicing board certified periodontist of the American Academic of Periodontology, Dr. Lanning is a teacher and scholar developing instructional innovations and investigating their effectiveness through evaluation of student learning outcomes. She is a published author of peer-reviewed journals focusing on higher and health science education.

Dr. Lanning has presented at a number of annual conferences including the American Academy of Periodontology, American Dental Education Association, and All Together Better Health. She has completed extensive professional development programs through the University of Michigan School of Medicine, the Academy of Academic Leadership Institute of Teaching and Learning, the American Dental Education Association Leadership Institute and the Stanford University Faculty Development Center.

She serves as an American Dental Education Association Change and Innovation in Dental Education liaison and has received numerous teaching awards including the VCU WISDM Annual Professional Development Award, and American College of Dentists Outstanding Faculty Award.
