1st grade read “The Dot” and discussed what encouragement looks like.

We talked about all the different people who can encourage us (family, friends, teachers, and even pets!) and then they made drawings of these people (or pets). One student even drew me encouraging him! That’s the Mona Lisa in the background!

Then, we talked about concentric circles, Wassily Kandinsky, and non-representational art. The students created their own artworks using concentric circles (like Vashti’s teacher had Vashti sign her dot, I had my students sign their artworks), and after this, we “framed” them and did a gallery walk, talking about how displays and museums can communicate value or importance.
