Boost your resume: earning a digital tech specialization can open doors — even if you’re not a tech major
You can earn a technology specialization — without being a tech major
The VCU College of Engineering’s Department of Computer Science now offers a Fundamentals of Computing specialization (CMSC 191) that is open to all VCU undergraduates regardless of major.*
To earn the specialization, students complete four courses:
- Introduction to Computing (prerequisite)
- Software Engineering and Web Development
- Data Science Skills
- Cybersecurity Skills
Students who complete three of the four courses (Intro to Computing, Data Science and Cybersecurity Skills) are eligible for:
- The Greater Washington Partnership (GWP) Digital Technology Credential, which gives students exclusive advantages with companies in the Capital Region, including Capital One, Ernst & Young, FIS, S&P Global, Washington Gas and Northrop Grumman
- A digital badge that can be posted to LinkedIn and added to resumes
Your student should ask their adviser about fitting the Fundamentals of Computing specialization into their degree planning. Students sign up through E-services. Search Computer Science and register for CMSC 191.
*Except computer science majors and minors
