We may have just had a snowstorm, but summertime is not that far away. Now is a great time to be thinking about what options your student would like to explore during these warmer months.

Summer Studies

VCU offers a robust course schedule during the summer semester, giving lots of options to students. Summer classes are a great way for students to get ahead in their degree field or finish up a pre-requisite course before fall semester begins. These classes can also be a GPA booster or a time to take an adventurous class and explore new options. Registration for summer courses began on Tuesday, February 16. For more information about Summer Studies, please click here.

If taking summer courses at VCU isn’t an option, students can also investigate local opportunities for summer courses.

Study Abroad

The opportunity to study abroad can be a rewarding experience for students and make them more marketable upon graduation. Some study abroad programs are offered during the summer and may include classes pertaining to student’s majors. VCU’s Education Abroad office is dedicated to providing a wide array of study abroad programs and options to VCU students wishing to add an international experience to their academic studies. Find out more information about programs here.

Internships

Some majors may require an internship as a part of their curriculum and summer can be a good time to get ahead start on that requirement;  however, internships are a great opportunity even if they are not mandatory. Internships can help students build connections with professional businesses in their field of study and gain real-world experience. VCU Career Services provides students with assistance and resources for internships here.

Jobs

Summer jobs are a good way for students to save up for college expenses the following semester and to begin or continue building their resume. Students can search for jobs around VCU and the Richmond area using hireVCUrams or they can search their local job market for opportunities. Keep in mind that many students, including high school students, will be applying for summer positions so it’s never too early to start looking and applying for opportunities.
