News and information beyond the classroom

Dear students:

I hope that your classes are off to a good start!

We want to provide students who are considering participating in registered student organizations – including affiliated, registered, and sponsored student organizations – three important updates regarding student organization activities based upon the recommendations of both an internal and an external review of Fraternity and Sorority Life at VCU.

First, the Student Code of Conduct has been revised to clarify for the university community how the policy applies to individual students and student organizations. You may find and review the Student Code of Conduct on the VCU Policy website. Under the Student Code of Conduct, the university uses the factors listed in the FAQ on page 24 to determine whether a registered student organization (RSO), rather than or in addition to individual students, is responsible for misconduct.

Second, all new fraternity and sorority member activities, including recruitment and intake, are postponed until further notice. The university will announce the dates on which fraternities and sororities are authorized to resume these activities. Students who become aware of unauthorized activity may report relevant information here.

Third, alcohol is prohibited for the 2021-22 school year at all activities, events and gatherings of recognized student organizations with undergraduate student membership, regardless of how the event is funded.

The university notified student organization leaders of the updates for their organizations on August 2.

We hope that you continue to be interested in learning about how to become involved with student organizations at VCU. Please let me know if you have any questions by contacting vcudean@vcu.edu. I hope that you have a good upcoming Labor Day weekend!

Sincerely,

Reuban B. Rodriguez, Ed.D.
Associate Vice Provost and Dean of Students
