Meet Ph.D. candidate Johnnie O’Neal
O’Neal, a fifth-year doctoral candidate in the Virginia Commonwealth University School of Social Work, earned his B.S.W. from Limestone College and his M.S.W. from the University of South Carolina. His prior practice experience includes working as a clinical social worker with individuals living with HIV/AIDS and as a medical social worker in various hospital settings. Currently, O’Neal serves as an adjunct instructor in the B.S.W. and M.S.W. programs at the VCU School of Social Work. He previously served as adjunct professor in the B.S.W. program at Limestone College. His teaching interests are social work health care, social justice, human behavior and the social environment, and practice sequences. O’Neal also serves as a research coordinator with the Center for Biobehavioral Clinical Research at the VCU School of Nursing where he coordinates research studies, supervises 10 to 12 research assistants and collaborates with faculty researchers on existing and future studies. His dissertation, “Older MSM and HIV/AIDS: A Grounded Theory Study to Inform Prevention,” is currently in the analysis stage and will be defended in fall 2013. Its purpose is to increase knowledge as it relates to HIV prevention for older adults, more specifically older men who have sex with men (MSM) who are HIV-negative.
