Introducing the 2016 Federal Policy Fellows
The Virginia Commonwealth University School of Social Work is pleased to announce the Federal Policy Fellows for 2016.
The Federal Policy Fellows is a unique hands-on educational opportunity for social work students to travel to Washington D.C. to learn about policy making from lobbyists, advocates and policy makers. The 2015 Federal Policy Fellows visited the Capitol and the Supreme Court and met with officials from the National Association of Social Workers‘ national office, spoke with school alumna and President and CEO of the National Coalition for Low Income Housing, Sheila Crowley, and advocated for improvements in low-income housing policy at the office of Congressman Bobby Scott.
“The program gave me insight into the political realm and illustrated the importance of the role of a social worker in politics and policy making. I really feel like I can influence policies that affect society, and promote change for the betterment in the lives of the voiceless and oppressed,” said recent B.S.W. graduate Kiley Mayfield.
This year’s program has been expanded to include both undergraduate and graduate students. Each fellow will participate in 4 one-hour policy seminars and will accompany Alex Wagaman, Ph.D. and Matthew Bogenschutz, Ph.D., assistant professors in the School of Social Work, for a day-long hands-on experience in D.C.
